Do you use parport?
I have parport configured as a module using kernel 2.2.12
I have a zip drive and a printer on the parallel port.

insmod /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/parport.o
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/parport_pc.o io=0x378 irq=7
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/parport_probe.o
insmod ppa

/usr/src/linux/.config contains
CONFIG_PARPORT=m
CONFIG_PARPORT_PC=m
# CONFIG_PARPORT_OTHER is not set
CONFIG_PNP_PARPORT=m
CONFIG_PARIDE_PARPORT=m

I'm dot sure how it works but it does work for me.
