nope... no assumption. check the original message again and you will see
the line:
using RH 6

putting graphical on 3 and text on 2 is frankly broken.
However, it is possible to use linuxconf on a redhat system to do this if
you're not comfortable with editing the /etc/inittab.
The line you're looking for in inittab is:
id:5:initdefault:
just change the 5 to a 3.
not that hard really.
