 In /etc/X11/XF86Config, I have:


Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "My Video Card"
        Monitor "CustomConfiguration"
        DefaultDepth 16
        Subsection "Display"
                Depth 16
                Modes "1152x864" "800x600"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

 And the machine went into 800x600 on me.
