There's nothing wrong, as such, but your machine just isn't up to the task.
96MB of RAM is the killer, but SO is happier with slightly more horsepower
too. You noted that 'the hdd goes mad' - it's loading a bunch of code but
more to the point is that with 96MB of RAM, you'll be swapping to run SO. On
this 750MHz Athlon with 256M RAM SO takes about 30 seconds to start, which
is quite a while considering the machine.

On the same machine, with SO still open, starting Word 97 on 'doze 98 under
VMware takes 6 seconds, VMware having taken about 4 seconds to restart a
suspended 'doze session.
