[ILUG] Name resolving problem ???

[ILUG] Name resolving problem ???

Glen Gray slaine at online.ie

Hi there folks,

This is my third time attempting to post this. There seems to be some
problems with online.ie this morning.

I've at last started to look at setting up a Linux network at home. I
managed to rebuild an old P90 with 24Mb RAM for the server role. It
won't be doing anything special so it dosen't need more RAM.

I went for a RH6.2 Server install on the machine and I also added DHPCD
and X and a couple of other utilities. DCHPD and DNS/named/bind (what
ever it's called) are setup and appear to be working correctly. I say
appear as I am having some problems with Linux clients and not Windows.
Both clients dual boot RH7.0 workstations/gnome install and Windows
2000. In Windows I can telnet to the server using hostname and ip
address. No problems. Ping responds immediately. Different story under
linux. Telnet server disconnects me. The message in /var/log/secure is
either that it can't verify the hostname as per /etc/hosts.allow or
just a plain denied to IP address entry. Ping also acts strange. It
dosen't respond for a second or two and then about 8 responses come at
once and then it continues as per normal. Also route takes a lifetime
to comeback with the detault route entry. But it responds instantly
with a route -n command.

I'm a little stumped as to where to look next. Any suggestions ???

TIA
Glen
