Just to clarify matters, author in this sense should and does include
active maintainers and contributors to free software (Lars pointed out
that he isn't the original author of the software mentioned on
cork.linux.ie but he is current maintainer of/contributor to several
projects.)
I can just see us arguing over who a contributor is now..
