3com aren't exactly known for selling cheap hardware (although a web search
says it costs closer to the 200 mark), it's hardly fare quoting the prices of
the upper range of external TAs against the lower range of internals (I don't
think I've ever seen internal TAs for as low as 30 quid, but I have seen a lot
that cost over 50)

Actually, now that you mention it, I don't know why I said that. I remember
reading many moons ago that internal TAs used UART 16550 chip for some obscure
reason or other, I wasn't fully convinced back then either
