Thanks for the tip.
For anyone who is wondering how to turn on core dumps
do the following in your /etc/profile
uncomment the line 
  ulimit -c 20000     # only core-files less than 20 MB are written
if it is commented
and comment the line
  ulimit -c 0                     # don't create core files
if it not commented.
