That would be the unclear-on-the-concept implementation that (e.g.) 
Red Hat Software provides, these days.

script that invokes cpio.  Trivial kludge to support v. 4.x RPMs is
noted in http://linuxmafia.com/pub/linux/utilities-general/00index.txt
