[ILUG] Show stopper of the day

[ILUG] Show stopper of the day

Mark Kilmartin mrk at renre-europe.com

I have just come accross what I would consider to be a show stopper
problem with xfree86 4.0.2 and it is that is decides to overwrite some
files in /var these include.(This is with the glibc21 binary distribution)

These files include.
/var/lib/rpm/ Which is the rpm database
/var/lib/games/
/var/lib/dosemu/
/var/lib/news/
/var/lib/nfs/
/var/lib/pgsql/

If you are interested in a full list take a look at the files in Xvar.tgz
from the 4.0.2 distribution.

Has anybody else been bitten by this problem.

It caused me to have to totally reinstall a workstation twice first to
find out what was actually causing the problem. And then again to fix it.

This is all on a RH6.2 system.

The problems probably aren't as bad for people not running a rpm based
system.

But some of the other files which are overwritten seem to be important as
well.
