Declan,
I use fetchmail to collect POP3 mail aswell - I was getting the exact same
error message when I started using it. I got around it by specifying the
protocol in the command as follows:
fetchmail -p POP3 <mail.server>
That sorted everything for me. Hope it helps you.
On Fri, 6 Apr 2001 Declan Grady didst pronounce:
:With netscape mail I can get pop3 mail from another machine
:'mail.nuvotem.com' on my lan.
::i tried a 'fetchmail mail.nuvotem.com' and it asked me for a password,
:tells me I have one message, but then it fails with an SMTP error trying to
:connect to localhost.
::I tried the same as root, and it gives me an authentication error, which is
:correct as the mail server is a win98 machine, and there is no 'root'
:account on it !
::I did have a look in the /var/log/maillog and /var/log/messages, but nothing
:that makes any sense to me appears there !!
::Any suggestions ?
::Thanks,
:Declan
