ditroff == "device independent troff". The first version of troff was
tied to a specific model of phototypesetter. Later versions of troff
generated an intermediate form that was then processed into the final
typesetter-specific data. A ditroff file is like TeX's dvi files in
this repect.
Try groff instead of troff. I've had them give different results
before. Failing that, mail the .ms file to me off-list and I'll have
a play with it.
