seriously, it means you already have X running (probably from
xdm or gdm).
press Ctrl-Alt-F7 together, and it'll bring it back.
(or startx -- :1 should also work)
to try to figure out what's happening.. can
you try a failsafe login (if it's xdm (just a white box with
username/password) put in your username, and your password, but
don't press enter after the password, press F1. If it has menu
options, look for a failsafe session.. Then from the
xterm you get, run gnome-session. That should give you an idea
of what's going on, without logging you out immediately)
(if that lot doesn't work, try a login, then do a console login (Ctrl-Alt-F1)
as the user, and get .xsession-errors. We can do voodoo magic we that.. :)
