AFAIK, The 2.2. kernel uses IP chains and the 2.4 kernel uses IP tables.
However, there is a module for the 2.4 kernel called ipchains that allows
you to use ipchains commands. Just load the module and your old
IP chains commands should work.
Interestingly enough, the firewall that comes with RH7.1 is done like
this.
