[ILUG] Keyboard Mapping

My keyboard mapping is not UK - enough said.

I am using debian but am afraid of using Xfree86 setup as it has 
completely frozen the installation in the past. What file do I need to 
amend and what exactly is the entry I need to add to get the mapping 
right.

To all who responded, many thanks on the sound issue. Is there a good 
book on Debian to save me wasting everybody's time?
