The problem was that in the middle of the log was this little gem
(EE) Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such device)
I didn't have it enabled in the kernel config and it wasn't there by
default. Once I enabled it, things fell together pretty quickly and I now
have X server running. Thanks Liam Bedford for pointing this message out
to me. Next time, I'll grep for EE in the log file :-)
