Edit your /etc/lilo.conf and comment out the lines that read:
append=" ide1=autotune ide0=autotune"
Run /sbin/lilo and all should be well from your next boot.
However there's a good chance the source of your problem is elsewhere.
Try the command 'hdparm -d0 -c0 -m4 /dev/hda'. That should safely get
you respectable performance. You can throw that command into your
/etc/rc.d/rc.local
