We're not talking about everyone, we're talking about proprietry software
producers. Their goals are not necessarily the same as the open source
developers. Do you think that being considered an appropriate platform for
serious software development is a bad thing for Linux? I.e, it should move
beyond being a tool for Linus to learn the 386, but not that far beyond?

If (as you seem to be suggesting), people should be relying on waiting for
a free alternative to a piece of proprietry software, then I feel that I
may as well be singing songs and holding hands.
