sorry, I meant that it should have given you the results
you expected, ie the output from df

yeah it shouldn't allocate a terminal unless you're logging in.
send us a copy of the output from:
ssh evilxander sh -c 'set; echo stty:;stty -a;echo tty:;tty'
it should give a "not a tty" error and have TERM=dumb, etc.
actually in your case you may have to do:
ssh linux 'sh -c "(set; echo stty:;stty -a;echo tty:;tty)1>&1"'
so you see the output!
