I deselcted 'Kernel module loader' from the config and everything now works fine. I get error messages about the kermel not being in sync with the kernel image (i.e the deb image loaded) but everything is working. By the way I installed the kernel the traditional way and not the Debian way - i.e without using kpkg.
Thanks again. Does anybody know of a good debian kernel tutorial? The ones I have found so far are not very in depth.
