does the board have an smbus/i2c header? lot of new boards do, and you
could get a cheap i2c chip hook it up to that header and hook the
led output to the i2c device.

see lm-sensors.nu, esp. the hardware hacking link. and you could email
the guys there for advice as to what'd be the best i2c device for your
purposes.
