Hiya,
What distribution are you using?
I've recently been playing with Redhat 7.1 and found out a few things:
1 - telnetd is disabled by default, use SSH or enable the telnet daemon (I
use ntsysv for doing this).
2 - ipchains is setup during install (if you use normal security on
installtion). This can block various services. I had to modify the ipchains
to get xdmcp access to the box. Have a look at /etc/sysconfig/ipchains.
