try xine. It can use windows dll's and I've used it to successfully
play divx movies fullscreen without frameloss and perfect audio sync.
nifty software :) It works on the .asf MS ship with winMe as a demo of their
movie editor package (the kid on the trike)

P.S. You can also try aviplay but the interface is muck and it cant play mpegs
