Were you using a framebuffer server for your laptop?
Do you still have a copy of the previous kernel, maybe
you should revert back to that , and use 'make oldconfig'
when you are preparing the 2.4.x for compile...
I dunno really, the XServer should be giving you some
sort of error on your first console screen.

Subject: [ILUG] No X-Server after compile of new kernel.
Hi all,
Slight problem, compiled a 2.4.6 kernel on RH7.1 - compiles perfectly, whoo
hoo!
But, no x-server loads, just flashy screen and the annoying thing is we have
it selected to load automagically at boot.
Has anyone come across this before? I'm compiling same kernel on my mickey
mouse test box - p200 beside my desk which is currently running a
2.4.5-workstation kernel and that booted fine. I suppose I will find out
soon enough if its related to 2.4.6 or else we made a booboo somewhere with
the laptop.
Ideas anyone?
CW
p.s.: the kernels boot with no errors.
