I agree. Simplest way to avoid spam.
You could always ensure the list admin checks new applications (depending on
the volume), or at least gets a list of them, so he can remove them at a
later date.
Yahoo groups have a nice feature where you can register "posting" email
addresses. A list that I am currently on have recently implemented posting
restrictions, and all I had to do was add my work email address as well as
my home one.
