Have a look in /var/log/messages for IDE read errors. Linux doesn't seem
to handle these errors well - on ISO filesystems in particular.
If you see errors, the list of suspects should include the CD media, the
CDROM drive hardware (they don't last forever), the IDE cable (could be
loose or damaged), and finally weird stuff like a slowly failing PSU,
dodgy RAM, CPU, or motherboard - but those kinds of failures would tend
to expose themselves in more varied ways.
