[ILUG] mount problems,

Sounds suspiciously like the nfs server is not running on the desktop.
Could try restarting it and look at the messages.
Something line /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs.server stop then /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs.server start (I think!!)
