It's OK giving easy solutions when they are wrong...
% basename blah.txt
blah.txt
%basename /tmp/blah.txt
blah.txt
basename will just strip off the directory and leave the full name of the
file. This isn't what he wants.
dirname does the opposite - strips off the filename and leaves the
directory.
rename is what he wants alright...
% rename .dat "" *.dat
