Check out memtest. This takes literally hours to check your RAM (well, 
depending how much of it you have, i suppose). It's at www.memtest86.com. To 
check out your CPU, do what the other guy said i.e. compiling a kernel. This 
explained a few crashes i had when i overclocked my P75 to 120!
