Hi Niall,
Have you checked the bttv mini howto? You probably have but it's at:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/BTTV-Mini-HOWTO-0.3-4.html
Anyway, I know this as I have just been setting up my WinTV card and had
similar problems, I was missing bttv and i2c. I see in the howto that you can
pass parameters to the modules when you load them. The parameter for tuner
allows you to select the tuner you have on your card. It also says to look at
/var/log/messages when your loading the modules to see if they have
automagically detected your card and tuner properly. I've just managed to get
xawtv working to the extent that it loads and I hear noise from the speakers.
I haven't tuned anything in as the damn TV socket in my room isn't working and
I've been too lazy/busy the this week to test it with the video. I think I'll
check it this evening though just to make sure.
Paul.

and presumably the waitpids are when it's trying to fork off a process to do
tuning or something. When I start xawtv, the bttv, i2c and videodev modules
get loaded but tuner does not. However, I have the same problem even after I
manually load tuner. kwintv also does not find any channels. Yesterday I had
RTE-1 only but that may have been a hangover from running it in Windows, and
the card was left tuned to that freq. - the box has been turned off since.
Help me watch TV while I (pretend to) work :-)

If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a minute and a half, how
long would it take a monkey with a wooden leg to kick all the seeds out of a
dill pickle?
