[ILUG] Tip of the day: Don't do this

[ILUG] Tip of the day: Don't do this

Hi,

If you've ever been tempted to add something more to ld.so.conf than you
should, then don't. Las night I discovered that /usr/local/lib wasn't in there
when I was trying to compile some stuff so I added it. No problem there except
I got curious as to what else might be missing so I hastely added
/usr/glibc-i586-something as it also contains libs and I thought "What harm
could it possibly do?". Kate was right when he said there were no stupid
questions. I then ran ldconfig and I no longer have functional linux box.

While I'm here, if depmod gives an error unresolved symbols in module foo, does
that meen that foo is looking for another modules and can't find it? Once I
break out the Ilug BBC and fix my "mistake" I'm going to try and get that
sorted too.

Paul.

A computer without a Microsoft operating system is about as usefull as a dog
without bricks tied to its head.
