have you tried loopback mounting the offending image on a linux box?
and don't just mount it, run a find on it, or if you're really paranoid
run something like this:
find /path/where/cd/mounted -type f -exec cat '{}' \> /dev/null \;
and watch for errors on both stdout and in /var/log/messages (kernel
complaints about the fs it's mucking with might only show up there).
