I just tried ssh -X to a Debian box from a Solaris box, and DISPLAY
was correctly set to localhost:10.0, which will forward to the X
server on the Solaris end.

Did you give the -X option?  I think you also need to enable X11
forwarding on the server side ("X11Forwarding yes").
