on the off chance ... 

Is the little write protect tab on the disk set ...

you could also try this (as root)

mount -t vfat -o rw /dev/fd0 /floppy/
assuming that you've an  error free dos formatted floppy in the drive
if this doesn't work (with write protect off) investigate that the drive
ain't fukt.
