Crazy: it works. Following the dist-upgrade, I had to manually
apt-get install xserver-xfree86 (which contains the core X server and
driver modules), link /etc/X11/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 and add my
TrueType directory to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. I created the config
file using xf86config, but debconf should also handle it as part of
the apt-get install of the server.
Alas, I can't try DRI (the 3D stuff) because my card is not yet
supported. Gar.
