yep.  the idea of a single "spare" mount mount is silly.  /mnt/tmp if
it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.  and the scheme for /media only
half solves the problem.  what if i have two dvd drives?  what if i have
multiple partitions on a zip disk?

not well thought out.
