Oh, capacitors can explode all right...

I can't remember if it was overvoltage, or reverse voltage, but
I subjected an electrolytic cap to some punishment once to see
what would happen.

After a minute or so: BANG! and streams of plastic-coated
metal foil everywhere...

Tantalums don't fail anywhere near as spectacularly.  Of course,
most of the big caps in a monitor are nice juicy electrolytics!
