alternatively try

ALTER SESSION SET NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'YYYY-MON-DD HH24:MI:SS'

if you want all dates to be like that.

Stick SET NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'YYYY-MON-DD HH24:MI:SS' in init.ora if you
want it to always be that way.

You may have to mess about with column widths as well if you're using
sqlplus (e.g. SET DATEWIDTH=20 (iirc)).
