Probably nothing, I found the above using google.
Please forgive me but a quick man tar on a RH6.2 box here does not reveal
the -a option.

I think it is the sort of question(the disscusion of tar) which pops up a
couple of times a year and I think it is usually resolved with the answer
of use what ever incantation that works for you and you are happy
using. ;)
