after taking Chris's suggestion of using strace I decided to go back and
look more closely at how cdrecord had compiled. Previously I had only
compiled by typing make. Reading the specifics I say that they offered
their own make program (Gmake.linux). After I compiled using this
everything works fine.

All this trouble for not reading the right doc. Originally I had just
punched in ./configure and the reply was just to type make....I hate
being a dumb-ass.

Thanks for all the help. It saved me from using some of Sid's percussive
maintenance (todays userfriendly)!
