Well, I had a generic PCI modem up until Monday when I changed to a
3Com/U.S. Robotics external. So far, I haven't been disconnected after 3
hours on the new modem, and never was disconnected on the old one.
I was having problems with the PCI modem, but I think it's just 'cos it was
knackered - I failed to get connected to the net all day Sunday and last
week was a nightmare. I think it "might" have been sensitive to line noise,
'cos when I did manage to get connected, I got speeds ranging from 14.4k to
about 31.2k - I was usually bumped off after 3-4 minutes. Eircom tested the
line and said it was fine. And Esat said that everything was working fine at
their end.
I've also noticed a huge increase in the speed of connection to the SNL
system. Previously it took around 60 seconds - now it's down to around 20.
Ok, access speed isn't back up at around 45k like it used to be, but hey,
it's better than 14.4k!
