That problem was actually Gerard's rather than mine though, from the error
he reports, it looks like he's trying to mount the CDROM (/dev/hdc) rather 
than the writer (hdd=ide-scsi)

That's likely true but it seems here that the CDROM becomes unavailable
under hdc.  IIRC, my /dev/cdw (the writer) points to /dev/scd0 or the like.
