IIRC, Borland C++ (the Dos/Windows version) had a utility that allowed you
to break down a DLL (or EXE) file into it constituant parts, change parts of
it (like strings), and 'recompile'. This allowed to to change strings to
any length as it would make any relevent changes to pointers and stuff so
they didn't break.
Used it once or twice to good effect. Can't remember the name of the
application though, and I'm sure there are similars ones available from
elsewhere.
