ethtool-1.0 ships on the second CD of Mandrake 8. I tried it against my
2.4 kernel and it doesn't work. Gets EOPNOTSUPP on whatever ioctl() it's
doing, and as a non-root user I get ENOPERM. mii-tool doesn't need root
access to read the current status of the device.
I also note the following the the BUGS section of the ethtool man page:
Currently supported by Sun Happy Meal Ethernet only.
One has to wonder how many people are using HME cards on i586 machines.
ethtool doesn't ship with RedHat 5.2 either on i586 or SPARC.
