There are exactly as many servers running Linux as there are servers running
Linux :-) If you meant servers running Linux compared to servers running NT,
various companies come out with figures comparing Linux shipments as against
NT/2000 shipments. IMHO these figures are basically useless, as they don't
take into account that there's no limit to the number of servers which can
be installed from one purchased distribution of Linux. For example, Google
has approximately 10000 servers. If they were running NT/2000, Google
wouldn't be half the resource it is, but aside from that, there would be
10000 sales of NT clocked up (or presumably, some kind of site license) but
you may be damn sure that Google didn't buy 10000 Red Hat boxed sets.
Netcraft (www.netcraft.com AFAIR) publishes a survey of web sites regularly
which identifies the OS running on publicly available web servers, and of
those, something > 50% are running Linux. But as for servers for other uses,
it's very difficult to say.
