if you're on a system (both the local and remote end) with a newish
version of tar that supports bzip2 (tar --help|grep bzip2):
tar Icpf - dir.to.move | ssh remotehost 'cd remote/dir && tar Ixpf -'
otherwise:
tar zcpf - dir.to.move | ssh remotehost 'cd remote/dir && tar zxpf -'
