What are you a fan of then? What are you doing on the ILUG list? Perhaps you
know what's going on in Linux because you know Linux, much as a Windows admin
would know what's going on in Windows

Most Linux installations these days have progress bars, I enjoy looking at
them but not as much as I do Windows

In truth most Linux distributions install stuff without telling you, quite
frankly the average Linux user doesn't want to have to verify whether to
install every package, especially with the cost of disk space these days

Have a look at the libs that most Linux distributions install these days, I
think you'll find many that you never use

Even if everything you said above were true (very few of which is), your
analogy is still crud. If you had said that Windows was a slow OS then it
might be appropriate
