Obviously enough - I mentioned that only because there've already been a
couple of different symptoms with Intel NICs cured by the new driver.

If you've got some screwed kernel code, that's about the only thing which
can hang the machine, apart from dodgy hardware, runaway processes, . . . .

dmesg|grep eth should give you a hint. And I'd concur with what others have
said - try upgrading to a later kernel. Also, as this box is from Dell, was
it a Dell factory install of RH ? If so, you might try bending their ears.
