Assuming you mean a shell function, then what's below will do... the
function is (IIRC) optional - it's only there for clarity. And your
functions can be declared anywhere in the script before they're used, it
doesn't have to be at the start. And the value of hello is the return
value of the last command in the function (the echo in this case).

function hello() {
   echo "Hello, world!";
}

hello;
