that's just it, /kevin doesn't exist. in fact if i changed dir to any
dir with a base of /u, it would just drop the /u.
i rebooted the box and it started working again.
the word "boggle" comes to mind.
uname -a reports "OSF1 vger V5.1 732 alpha" just in case anyone else
sees this problem.
